Description

Badly pitted black slate, with incised inscription (the first few lines partly illegible) commemorating Helmsley-born town clerk Robert Sandwith snr (c. 1742-84), his widow Ann (née Daulton; d. 1798), and their son Robert jnr (c. 1768-1825), a well-respected solicitor who practised in Bishop Lane and has a wall plaque erected by his wife (ID: 110; NADFAS: 1118).

who died the 30:th December A.D. 1798

Solicitor of this Town,
who died the 13:th January A.D. 1825
Aged 57 Years.
A Man
eminent and honourable
in his profession,
and deeply regretted by a large
circle of acquaintances.

The stone is badly pitted all over, but especially at the top, making parts of the inscription, which has lost its white filling, illegible. The choir screen wall cuts into the L hand side of the stone.
