Floor Slab – Elizabeth Skinner

Description

Cement-damaged slate heraldic ledger to Elizabeth Skinner (c. 1683-1749), daughter of William Skinner, evidently after a lengthy period of illness or physical disability. Heraldic achievement in oval, approx 940 x 710 mm: Skinner arms – ermine, three lozenges sable charged with fleurs de lys or (ermine background, with 3 black lozenges on which are gold/yellow fleurs de lys); helmet crest: a dragon's head erased, azure (blue dragon's head).

Year of death may actually be 1750, as per burial register, given New Year was still often calculated from Lady Day (25 March).

While the stone itself appears intact and the carving in good condition, a band of cement infill runs across the heraldic achievement from footing of former chapel partition (hence omission by NADFAS in 1986). A current partition (storage) also runs across the text.
