Barbara, first wife of Samuel Lister

Memorials

Floor Slab – Barbara Lister

Common name(s): Floor Slab – Wife of Samuel Lister
Catalogue ID: 477
NADFAS ID: 1324

Description

Slate, with border inscription commemorating the un-named "Wife of Samuel Lister", d. 1 May 1645. The burial register identifies her as Barbara. She was probably only in her 20s: her husband Samuel (born c. 1615) was Sir John Lister and his wife Elizabeth Armin(g)e's second son. He married Elizabeth Parker as his second wife in Jan 1647/48, in Edmonton and settled in Estoft/Eastoft, Lincolnshire. The central panel of the stone has a number of scratches and abrasions, but there may be faint traces of a kneeling female figure in profile (cut very shallow, like the John Ramsden stone, hence now almost lost entirely).
